Anne Leveque

A master of abstract oil painting, Anne builds monumental canvases layer by layer, moving from instinctive gesture toward stillness. She has exhibited across the USA and internationally, most notably at the Rotunda of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and other major galleries throughout Asia and the United States.

Known for her vibrant, huge-format canvases and for workshops that have inspired painters worldwide. Her work carries a numinous, luminous quality: the frequency of light creating space, its power held in restraint.

The feeling of painting is like the first wind catching the sail of my boat, and in this very instance of the wind - or the brush - the day has instantly changed, and the wind is at my back.

Anne Leveque

The Workshop

Light, Color, and Instinct

Anne teaches through demonstration and guidance: pure, unmixed color laid straight onto the canvas, built within a restraint of just five colors, layered through addition, deletion, and course correction until the image finds itself.

Painting in stillness, from breath without interruption, is encouraged. Source is the inspiration throughout. Without music or distraction, the unconscious and subconscious are open to quiet Source Energy flowing in.

Day One

Anne opens with the philosophy behind abstraction — why the process works the way it does. May give a demonstration. Then quiet, uninterrupted time and space for creative instinct to take over.

Day Two

Layering and Direction: Painting continues with Anne's guidance. The progressions are like cooking in a wok: ingredients added one by one, until the elements merge into a whole. Chinese food is also on the menu during the workshop, as an added sense of enhancement.

Day Three

Critique and Completion: Every student receives a full, personal critique from Anne, with insight to carry the work toward completion. Across the retreat, most painters complete three canvases, 36x48 inches or larger.

Near the end, I share a closing talk — part suggestion, part show-and-ask, part insight — and every guest takes home a gift copy of my book of painting and poetry, Syllables.
